Striebel, T.: The Heidenhoehlen (Heathen's Caves) near Zizenhausen
(8120/01K) - an Example for Artificial Caves of Older Date of
Origin
Summary
The Heidenhoehlen near Zizenhausen, near the town of Stockach in
the surroundings of the Lake Constance, set an example for
artificial caves of older date of construction which are rarely
interpretable nowadays.
This paper contains short descriptions of location and geology and
detailed descriptions of the five caves, which range 92 m along
the slope and which have a total length of 82 m. The descriptions
are completed with surveys.
A comprehensive overview of the existing literature is following.
It starts with the oldest description in hand from Haager (1876).
- An attempt of explanation leaves many unanswered questions,
because there doesn't exist enough literature for comparision with
similar objects and there is a lack of research on the side of
specialists. But it is nearly certain that the objects are very
old in comparision to the numerous artificial cellar caves in the
surroundings of the Lake Constance.
